Thank you for your interest in Huntingdonshire Philharmonic Society, or Hunts Phil, as we are usually known. The society consists of both a choir and orchestra. We welcome new members; at the moment we are particularly keen to attract new singers (all voices), brass and strings.
We play four or five concerts a year, sometimes including one which is orchestra-only. These are usually held at Hinchingbrooke Performing Arts Centre, Huntingdon, though we also play in Ely Cathedral for special occasions. Recent works performed include Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, Berlioz’s Te Deum in Ely Cathedral, Delius’ Sea Drift, Verdi’s Requiem, Elgar’s Cello Concerto and Tippett’s A Child of Our Time.
We rehearse during school terms, from September to the date of the last concert. Rehearsals are held at New Hall, Godmanchester Community Academy, Park Lane, Godmanchester, PE29 2AG, from 7:45 to 9:45 pm; the choir meets on Tuesdays, the orchestra on Thursdays.
Joining the Hunts Phil
Prospective orchestra members should have some experience, and a minimum of Grade 7 ability. Orchestra members are expected to attend a short, informal audition after a few weeks. Choir members require a good voice and enthusiasm for singing. Previous choral experience is not necessary, but would be helpful. Members of both the orchestra and choir are expected to attend all rehearsals and concerts. If you are unable to do so, please notify your section rep or the orchestra leader as long in advance as possible.
Our current membership fees are £140, with a reduced fee of £120 for members of pensionable age; fees are waived for students in full-time education. Members are encouraged to publicise each concert as widely as possible, as good ticket sales help offset the rising costs of running the society. Eligible members are also requested to fill in a gift aid form, so the society can claim back tax on part of the subscription fee.
At the start of each term, the choir normally holds three open rehearsals. This coming term these will take place on Tuesdays 6th, 13th, and 20th September, starting at 7:45 pm, and prospective new members will be warmly welcomed. As well as rehearsing with the choir, there will be chance to meet and chat with our regular members. Either contact us in advance to let us know you are coming, or just turn up on the day. Outside of this time, please contact email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org for further information about the choir or orchestra, or if you would like to come along to a rehearsal. We look forward to meeting you!
